In Autumn 2008, the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recognised Adult ADHD for the first time. The advice in the NICE guideline covers: the care, treatment and support that children, young people and adults with ADHD should be offered and how families and carers can support people with ADHD.

The definition of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been updated in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to more accurately characterize the experience of affected adults.
